A sweeping novel of courage, sacrifice, and love set as America enters World War II in this enthralling work of historical fiction that keeps the reader turning pages.
The year is 1942, and America is drawn into the war and a world filled with oppression and prejudice. Widowed, desperate, and penniless, Marisol, a young Romani Gypsy woman, is forced to read tarot cards at a popular Ohio lakeside amusement park, instead of learning to read and become the doctor her grandfather encouraged her to be.
Along the shores where big bands come to play, thousands of wartime-weary visitors long for an escape. There, Marisol is drawn into a forbidden romance with Will, who has signed up for the draft to become a pilot, against his wealthy railroad tycoon father’s wishes. In a secret room beneath the Crystal Ballroom, where she keeps forbidden books and mentors Marisol to read and apply to a charity medical program, the park manager’s wife Lila grieves the loss of her child.
When the prejudiced park company’s man cuts safety corners and sabotages and accuses the Romanies of stealing to eradicate them from the park, Marisol is faced with defending her family’s honor and livelihood. When the dangers of fate lurk in the shadows and as the final weekend draws near, Marisol must choose between loyalty to them and her heritage or abandoning her dreams.
Now ninety years old and telling her story at last, Marisol recalls how the events of that summer and the decisions she made forever altered her life.
With Paul’s rich period detail and cast of heartfelt characters, The Last Gypsy Queen offers a look back into the challenges of life governed by prejudice while finding the courage to accept more than the status quo.
Praise for The Last Gypsy Queen
"Paul’s The Last Gypsy Queen drew me into this unique American time period and place. I reached the end and wanted to know more about the characters, their lives and the history that inspired their stories. It is a fascinating, beautifully written and researched novel that speaks to anyone who has ever questioned their future or their place in a community.

“This beautifully written novel is perfect for book clubs with its prime-for-debate mix of love against the odds, a strong female protagonist, the fascinating weaving in of tarot card reading, and themes of identity and cultural bias.”
- SUSAN COVENTRY, author of Till Taught by Pain
“Paul presents a nuanced portrait of Romani culture, depicting the Romani as more than martyrs – despite Nazi persecution – and displays varied traits like those in any other group. Engaging characters and a well-realized milieu propel this inspiring narrative.” - KIRKUS REVIEWS
"A tale of love, resilience, friendship, and family, The Last Gypsy Queen is an immersive treasure."
- JENN BOUCHARD, author of Considering Us and Palms on the Cape
“A summer carnival whirs to life in a quiet corner of a world at war, and the lives it touches will never be the same. Linda Paul's sweeping historical romance pulled me into its world, where a forbidden love transcends cultural barriers. Her authentic portrayal of Romani culture avoids stereotypes. A story rich with humanity and heart.” - TAMATHA CAIN, author of Song of the Chimney Sweep
“It is great to see another story where one of us Gypsies is portrayed accurately. Like the Gypsy Queen in this narrative, we had to be resourceful, creative, and resilient. A must-read for all of those in our community.” - GARY G. STEELE, author of The Gypsy Family Circus series and great-grandson of Richard and Elizabeth Stanley Joles
